Edicts and Ethics are the legal and moral aspects of Creative Nonfiction. The legal dimensions refer to the accuracy of what you write. You always research what you write, even if it is about yourself. You can research facts or ask your family about your own life. The moral dimensions refer to if you're being truthful and not biased when developing your story. It is different than Telling the Truth because it is more focused around the idea of "If the characters in the story read your retelling of the event, would they agree with it?" aspect. The moral and legal aspects of creative nonfiction writing are very important in making sure your retelling is correct.
See Edicts and Ethics Examples Essays for examples of how to write in a way where there are no negative moral/legal parts to it. Example Essay #1 shows how to write about a negative topic, but not show the other characters in a negative light (ethics). Example Essay #2 shows how to incorporate facts and statistics into an experience you had (edicts). |
