The Poetry of Creative Nonfiction is incorporating parts of poetry into your essay. The most important parts to incorporate are imagery, figurative language, diction, and sound and rhythm. Imagery is any description that appeals to the five senses. Figurative language is used to compare to unlike things. Similes and metaphors are two examples of figurative language. Diction is, in the broadest sense, word choice. Examples of diction are using strong nouns, expressive verbs, and descriptive adjectives. Sound and rhythm are similar because they both deal with how it sounds when you read the narrative. Two effective ways to have sound and rhythm are repetition, using the same word over and over, and onomatopoeia, using words that (when spoken) sound like the sound an object would make. These parts of poetry are crucial to writing creative nonfiction in a style similar to poetry itself.
